There are many behaviour issues in the classroom can easily be considered as low-level behaviours. This is part of a series on how to deal effectively with these low level disruptive student behaviours. In the following series I provide practical classroom management solutions, some of which you may not have considered. Some you may have considered as problems, but perhaps not considered them in the perspective presented here.
1. Mistakes Teachers Make
In this video, you will learn the top 11 mistakes teachers make in classroom management. You will learn how to deal more effectively with the low level behaviours that can drive you crazy. Like students refusing to do any work, or not following your directions or talking when you are talking.
If you are like many teachers, you find these behaviours disrespectful and perhaps button pushing and you may find yourself thinking:
‘students should not behave this way’
‘I shouldn’t have to put up with this behaviour’
‘When I was at school I was respectful to teachers’, or the highly damaging
‘the student is doing this to me on purpose’.
These thoughts are not helpful for you and while you may even verbalise these thoughts at times, they can undermine your relationships with students, and reduce your confidence in your ability as a teacher.
2. Research Based Classroom Management Techniques
In this video you will be reminded of the effective classroom management practices that work. The classroom management practices that you may have forgotten because every year is different and every class is different and you may need to hone tools that you haven’t needed for a while.
Effective classroom management is about being intentional and purposeful in your words and actions that is, not leaving classroom behaviour up to chance but giving yourself and your students the best chance of success by using the strategies that are known to work.
3. Appropriate (and effective) Responses
In this video, you will learn specifically how to respond to low level behaviour in a way that keeps it low level; what to be aware of so that you respond to students in a way that supports your authority, promotes positive relationships, and maintains a calm, consistent predictable environment.
4. Listening Strategies
Research shows that it is these low level behaviours that make life hard for teachers because they can be persistent and frustrating and… In this video you will learn effective strategies to improve student listening and learning and reduce the number of times you need to repeat your instructions. Also reduce your level of frustration and annoyance and increase your sense of satisfaction and achievement as a teacher.
5. Are They Talking Too Much?
This is part of a series on how to deal with low level disruptive behaviour in ways that keep the situation calm and avoid escalating student behaviours. In this video you will learn how to address the situation of students talking too much. Using the strategies in this video you will also be able to deal with other low level behaviours in the classroom by applying the same principles and teacher skills.
