Practical Classroom Management Teaching Strategy Series
Disruptive student behaviour is one of the biggest concerns I hear from teachers at certain times. This is part of a series about what you can do when you have a number of ‘difficult students’ in your class. I am referring specifically to a younger class such as Kindergarten and year 1, 2 or perhaps 3. What you can do to address the issues, how you can prevent poor student behaviour and how you can increase levels of student engagement.
Part 1 – Learn How To Build And Sustain Positive Relationships (Kindergarten – 3)
In this video, you will learn how to build and sustain relationships with younger students so that you reduce the incidents of difficult student behaviour and increase student learning and wellbeing.
And so that you can increase your job satisfaction and save your own sanity.
Part 2 – How To Use Support Staff Effectively In Your Classroom
This is part of a series to address how to deal with a tricky class of students when they begin school.
That is, what can you do if you have a class of younger students who are displaying difficult behaviour both as a school and as a teacher. In this video, you will learn how to effectively utilise additional support in the form of a teacher aide or learning support assistant when you have difficult student behaviour.
You will learn how to increase the effectiveness of having an additional person in the room, reduce the likelihood of the student becoming dependent on the LSA and being stigmatised because of being treated differently.
Part 3 – How To Help Students Regulate Their Emotions ( Self Regulation )
In this video you will learn how to use student choice to help students learn to regulate their emotions and prevent difficult student behaviour that may originate through a feeling of powerlessness and lack of control.
Providing choice for students is about getting the outcome you want and being flexible about some of the details. It is about keeping your eye on where you want to go rather than being obsessive over how you are going to get there.
Part 4 – How To Use Pedagody Effectively For Your Students
In this video you will learn ways to engage your students through the use of effective and varied pedagogies. Pedagogy means the way you are going to teach a concept. Your decisions about the best way to teach your students is based on your knowledge of them and how they learn.
Using pedagogies for the sake of using them is not the criteria for effective teaching and learning. That is, it is not always appropriate to use technology or to use cooperative learning or inquiry. Choose the pedagogy that best suits the concept students are learning and what works best for them.
